Our Voices. Our Vision.

Meet Vanessa

Meet Vanessa

I’m honored to be the Democratic nominee for Town Supervisor of Austerlitz and want to earn your vote. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and concerns as I’m out and about in the community this fall. In the meantime, I’d like to share a bit about myself and why I’m running.

I’m a small business owner and real estate professional with over 20 years of experience leading teams, building relationships, and growing community-focused ventures. Before I founded The Hemptons in Spencertown, I established a recreational sports organization in New York City, where I built a powerful – and empowering – non-profit that serves thousands. With a background in both business and grassroots organizing, I know how to bring people together, solve complex problems, and turn good ideas into action for our town.

Nearly a decade ago, my partner and I discovered Austerlitz and were drawn in by its rolling hills and unspoiled landscape. We bought a beautiful old farm and have spent countless hours in the sun mowing the lawn (a task we actually enjoy), plowing the driveway (enjoy this quite a bit less) and working on endless projects. What began as a love of the land has grown into a deep appreciation for this community.

That sense of connection inspired me to serve. I was appointed by the Town Board to Chair the Housing Committee and have had the privilege of working with dedicated volunteers to explore practical ways to keep Austerlitz a place where people of all ages and incomes can thrive.

Through this work, I’ve also seen how our local government can improve. At June’s Democratic caucus, I was humbled to receive the majority of votes despite some surprising attacks from a small group. That experience only strengthened my resolve. Our town deserves leadership rooted in respect, transparency, and collaboration — not intimidation, control and exclusion.

What I'll Focus On

Here's the Plan

Protect Austerlitz’s Rural Character

Austerlitz’s beauty lies in its open landscapes and rural charm. As Supervisor, I will work to preserve these qualities by supporting thoughtful zoning and policies that protect our landscape, prevent overreach, and respect the character of our community. Rural preservation doesn’t mean resisting change, but guiding it carefully so that growth is thoughtful, balanced, and true to who we are as a town.

A Strong Voice for Austerlitz

Columbia County decisions affect us every day, and Austerlitz deserves a voice that speaks up for our Democratic values. As Supervisor, I’ll represent our town with fairness, inclusion, and collaboration — making sure the needs and priorities of our community are heard and respected at the county level. Whether it’s funding, planning, or policy, I’ll be a strong advocate for Austerlitz at every table where decisions are made.

Clear Communication and Open Decisions

Town government should be easy to follow, easy to reach, and built around real community input. I believe decisions shouldn’t be made behind closed doors or handed down from the top. As Town Supervisor, I’ll focus on clear communication and open processes that invite residents in from the start—so policies reflect the voices of the people who live here. When neighbors are informed, involved, and heard, the whole town moves forward together.

Our Vision for the Future

The choices we make now will shape Austerlitz for years to come. My vision is a town that protects its rural character while planning ahead for the needs of future generations. With thoughtful growth, sustainable practices, and real community involvement, we can preserve what we love while building a strong future together. That future should reflect our values, honor our landscape, and remain rooted in the spirit that makes Austerlitz special.
